Standards - Passenger Train Stations


(Note: Number preceding Standards and the Standards of Practice refers to the Item Number on the Train Station Checklist.)

Our Project is focused on passenger Train Stations that have regularly scheduled passenger train service. The facility and its surrounding area may include a building or shelter, a platform and other accommodations. In all instances it is expected that the services provided will meet the basic standards as outlined below.

100(I. Local and State Government Involvement: Local and State Government will be involved in passenger train station activities.)

Standards of Practice

101(The officials in the local government (City, Municipality, County, Parish) in which the Train Station is located will be actively involved with their Train Station. )

105(The local government (City, Municipality, County, Parish) in which the Train Station is located will have designated an office or agency to be responsible for Train Station oversight activities and will have designated an individual within that office or agency to coordinate Train Station activities. )

110(Local governments will have published emergency response assistance plans in place should an emergency event occur at a passenger Train Station or involving a passenger train in or near the jurisdiction. )

120(Local governments will have published contingency assistance plans in place should a passenger train be delayed for an extended period in or near the jurisdiction or if a number of passengers are stranded at the station due to a passenger train event. )

150(The state in which the Train Station is located will have designated an office or agency to be responsible for Train Station activities and will have designated an individual within that office or agency to coordinate Train Station activities. )

200(II. Street and Road signs: Train stations will have adequate street and road signs so that passengers and those meeting train travelers can locate a station by following signs to the station.)

Standards of Practice

205(Street and road signs adhering to the provisions of the FHWA Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) incorporating US DOT standard symbol (I-7 Train Station) will clearly designate that they are defining a route to the Train Station and will begin at all approaches to the city for that station and continue in an unbroken string to the station. Examples: These signs direct to Amtrak Train Stations. Similar signs would designate other Passenger Train operators with Train Stations they service. The importance is the use of the MUTCD (I-7) logo for Train Stations.

215(Street and road signs, in accordance with the MUTCD, will be comparable in size and positioning to other signs that designate routes to follow in the city. )

230(Street and road signs and supporting hardware will be kept in good repair and routinely maintained by the responsible government agency. )

250(Street and road signs will be manufactured so that they are as easily viewed during night conditions as in daylight. )

300(III. Street and road Access: Street and road access roads to train stations will allow direct travel from major roads and all roads will have prepared surfaces similar to other routes to similar destinations.)

Standards of Practice

305(Street and road access to the Train Station will be direct from adjacent street and roads. )

315(Street and road access to the Train Station will have appropriate traffic control signs and devices to allow a safe and efficient arrival and departure at the passenger Train Station. )

325(All roads leading to the Train Station will be in good condition and receive regular maintenance and inspection. )

335(Address assigned to the Train Station will be correct and consistent with addresses for other activities in the vicinity, recognizable by the USPS, all Internet mapping sites, and all consumer GPS systems currently manufactured will direct users easily and directly to the Train Station. )

337(Train Station address and access information will be published on all official websites (railroad, jurisdiction, city) and on informational sites (public and commercial). Train Station address and access will be available in published format. The address and access information will be consistent across all sources. )

345(Train Stations will have adequate parking for passengers and for those meeting travelers. Stations in locales with pedestrian traffic will have accommodations such as marked crosswalks and crossing lights. Locales with bicycle traffic will have accommodations for storage and security.)

355(Train Stations will have adequate area for those dropping or meeting passengers to do so safely and efficiently. )

365(All parking, driveways, Train Station access and other surfaces will be Americans with Disabilities Act compliant and maintained to that standard. )

400(IV. Station Building/Shelter: Train stations will provide an appropriate/maintained building/shelter that will provide comfort and utility for passengers and those dropping off or picking up. It will especially provide protection from adverse weather conditions.)

Standards of Practice

410(Train Station structures will be designed and constructed to accommodate the typical load for the Train Station. For Train Stations that are seasonal or have seasonal expansion the Train Stations will be designed and constructed to accommodate the highest load. Train Stations will have appropriate seating for the typical load of the Train Station. )

420(Train Station structures will provide complete protection from all weather elements while passengers and others wait for a train. )

440(Train Stations that have scheduled arrivals or departures during hours of darkness will have adequate lighting in the Train Station structure, the parking lots, drop-off/pickup areas, and the Train Station platform. )

450(Train Station (building, shelter, or area) will be open to allow passengers and those meeting trains access prior to scheduled train arrival. The opening time will be determined by the amount of time that the train operator has advised passengers to arrive at the Train Station prior to scheduled departure. This standard includes all trains scheduled for the Train Station. Train Station will remain open until the train has departed.)

460(Stations will always be clean and in good repair.)

470(Station grounds will be kept in good order and maintained up to the standard of other civic activities in the community.)

500(V. Information: All train stations will have appropriate posted information so that passengers and those waiting will have access to current train arrival and departure status.)

Standards of Practice

510(Published timetables and websites will reflect current schedules and status of amenities and services at station. Publications and websites with locations and directions to the station will be correct and always updated.)

520(Staffed stations will post current information and make regular announcements concerning train arrival and departure status.)

530(Unstaffed stations will post appropriate information about train schedules and will post information on methods for passengers and those waiting to determine train arrival status.)

540(All stations: Train times, status of trains, and all station local information will be available from websites, automated agents, and other electronic sources and will always be current and always accessible.)

550(Local information – All Train Stations: Current information will be posted or readily available for the following: a. Train Station location and directions b. Train Station hours c. Contact numbers for Train Station information and affairs d. Map of area e. Taxi & Public transit information f. Bicycle parking/lockers g. Restroom availability h. Inter-City Bus Terminals/Stops i. Airport info j. Food & beverage services available at train time k. Emergency Services l. Emergency Medical Services nearby. )

560(Published and electronic maps will use the US DOT standard symbol (I-7 Train Station) to mark the location of the Train Station if scale permits or will be used as a map callout linking to the city on the map.
